Overdrive’s IoT platform enables real-time asset monitoring at Changi Airport with Wireless Logic connectivity
Singapore-based IoT solutions provider Overdrive uses multi-network connectivity from Wireless Logic to monitor thousands of airside vehicles and ground support assets in real time.
Overdrive is an asset monitoring IoT solutions provider that helps businesses achieve real-time visibility of their operations on a single connected platform. When Changi Airport operators set out to strengthen safety and efficiency across its airside operations, it engaged Overdrive to deliver end-to-end IoT solutions to monitor the thousands of vehicles and ground support equipment moving across its airfield.
Overdrive developed an asset tracking platform that provides greater visibility into the movement of airside vehicles and ground support equipment. This comprehensive view of airside operations enables airport teams to make more informed decisions and improve situational awareness.
As the platform took shape, Overdrive needed connectivity that could hold up across the demanding conditions of the airside. This prompted them to look for a connectivity partner that could deliver the reliability and security needed for mission-critical IoT deployment. Wireless Logic emerged as the preferred choice.
The challenge
The airside is one of the most demanding operational environments in an airport. Thousands of vehicles and ground support equipment — from passenger buses and baggage tractors to maintenance vehicles — move around aircraft continuously, often within metres of one another.
Safety is paramount: operators must be able to detect potential hazards in the busiest areas of the airfield, including when a vehicle moves too close to an aircraft and requires immediate intervention.
Overdrive’s platform was designed to give airport teams real-time awareness of roadway conditions so they could respond and coordinate as soon as an issue arose. It also needed to identify delays, bottlenecks and congestion occurrences to help the airport maximise available space and improve capacity planning.
Underpinning each of these priorities is reliable IoT connectivity that keeps tracking data flowing to operators. Achieving it across a busy airfield can be challenging. Cellular coverage can vary around terminals, maintenance facilities and even underground as vehicles travel across the airfield.
The deployment also had to meet stringent airside cybersecurity requirements by keeping operational data off the public internet. With thousands of connected assets and devices in operation, Overdrive needed an IoT connectivity layer that it could manage centrally—without the complexity of multiple SIMs, SKUs or supplier contracts.
Executing this on the ground required a specialised solution, as physical SIM card swaps across thousands of active airside vehicles operating non-stop risked causing downtime or disrupting ongoing ground operations.
Airside operations require making the right decisions in real time. If vehicle proximity to aircraft or congestion builds up around a stand, teams need the visibility to act in that moment before a near-miss becomes an incident. The ability to respond quickly is fundamental to maintaining the airport’s safely and efficiency.
The solution
To deliver that visibility, Overdrive needed a connectivity foundation built for airside vehicle operations. Wireless Logic was chosen for its multi-network resilience, centralised connectivity management and ability to meet the airport operator’s stringent cybersecurity requirements. “Our asset tracking platform is designed to provide the airport’s teams with visibility of where every vehicle is at any given moment. That level of visibility depends entirely on connectivity we can rely on, which made it one of the most important parts of the deployment to get right,” says Aston Chia, CEO, Overdrive.
Maintaining continuous connectivity across a dynamic airside environment is critical. Wireless Logic's Local Multi-Network IoT SIMs enable each connected device to access multiple local networks, automatically switching when coverage weakens or a network becomes unavailable. This keeps vehicle location data flowing without interruption, even as assets move across different parts of the airport.
With thousands of connected devices in operation, the airport also needed a more efficient way to monitor and manage connectivity at scale. Because every device runs on a single multi-network SIM, there are no separate SKUs to purchase or manage — just one SIM card per device.
Overdrive manages the deployment through Wireless Logic's SIMPro, which provides a centralised view of each SIM’s status, the network it is using and its data usage, and flags any network issues that need to be resolved. This gives Overdrive the visibility to quickly identify and resolve connectivity issues.
Additionally, to ensure seamless tracking in low-coverage zones, such as subterranean basements and underground baggage tunnels where direct cellular signals struggle to reach, the broader solution incorporates Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh technology. BLE mesh allows nearby assets to relay data through one another, hopping signals across the network until reaching a vehicle with an active cellular link, keeping position and asset status connected anywhere on the airfield.
Wireless Logic also provisioned a Private APN, ensuring operational data remains on a private network rather than the public internet. Flexible data plans give Overdrive room to scale the deployment as the airport’s capacity requirements grow.
Outcome
This comprehensive visibility of all airside vehicles provides more than just an accurate picture of operations. It enables airport teams to identify delays, bottlenecks and congestion as they emerge, supporting faster operational decisions and more efficient use of capacity. The insights generated also contribute to longer-term planning as passenger numbers and operational demands continue to grow.
Today, the asset tracking platform monitors a growing fleet of more than 4,000 airside vehicles. Managing connectivity across thousands of IoT devices is also far simpler, reducing operational complexity for the airport.
"No connected system is immune to downtime and the occasional disruption; what matters is how quickly service is restored. A reliable partner in Wireless Logic means any issues are resolved quickly, keeping visibility dependable every single day," said Hendri, Head of Partnership & Sales, Overdrive.
Since deployment, the platform has delivered an estimated 30 percent improvement in operational efficiency while significantly reducing operational downtime.
Together, Overdrive and Wireless Logic have created a resilient and scalable foundation for smarter, data-driven airside operations — helping one of Asia’s leading airport operators improve safety, efficiency and the passenger journey.
"Our asset tracking platform is designed to provide the airport’s teams with visibility of where every vehicle is at any given moment. That level of visibility depends entirely on connectivity we can rely on, which made it one of the most important parts of the deployment to get right."
