Air Quality, and its impact on health, is now increasingly understood and the shocking mortality rate of up to 36,000 UK deaths a year linked to air pollution underlines the importance of Ultra-Protect’s work. The company is dedicated to helping customers provide healthy environments for employees, tenants and customers to live, work and relax within.

Among those customers, with a responsibility for the spaces they provide, are landlords. Awaab’s Law, introduced following the tragic death of a two-year-old child who was exposed to mould, is effective in the UK from October 2025. It mandates social landlords to address damp, mould and emergency repairs within fixed timeframes, something Ultra-Protect can help them with, as this is their specialist field as well as the smart build sector.

Ultra-Protect’s sophisticated air quality assessment determines the cause of pollutants and when and where they are released. The sensors transmit data in real-time to be analysed for pollution levels and pollutant types.

“Air Quality is invisible,” says Andy Potter, Director at Ultra-Protect. “You can’t visually see the problem so you can’t do anything unless you create visibility. We give that visibility through 24-7, 365-day a year data and then work with companies to understand that data.”

Armed with the information, Ultra-Protect can determine risks and devise an action plan, together with training and support, that puts the client organisation in control of its air quality.

Reliable, consistent connectivity is essential to the operation, but some of Ultra-Protect’s devices connected using 2G. With the 2G network phasing out, Ultra-Protect planned its migration strategy carefully and switched to an NB-IoT service.

Ultra-Protect’s connectivity provider couldn’t offer an alternative, so Andy and his team looked at the market and shortlisted four companies. Among them, Wireless Logic “stood out” for its all-round service package, with Andy praising the “honest” and “direct” approach with good communication and not over-communication.

Wireless Logic conducted a thorough assessment of Ultra-Protect’s business and requirements and determined that NB-IoT is the right technology. It is energy-efficient, has the deepest reach into underground deployments where some sensors need to be and supports long application lifecycles.

However, the Wireless Logic team understand the importance of maximising uptime and mitigating the risks that threatened IoT availability and business revenue. The NB-IoT solution it presented has resilience built-in through two network profiles on the same SIM.

Ultra-Protect’s trial of Wireless Logic’s solution yielded immediate results.

“Everyone’s happy,” says Andy. “We haven’t been back to site once – for me, that speaks volumes.”

One customer site had products connected over Wi-Fi which were also dropping out. Ultra-Protect replaced them with the Wireless Logic connected service and there have been no problems since.

“Now, our client has absolute confidence in the device and NB-IoT will be the way forward for them. In fact, we’ve received another two orders from other departments, so word is spreading.”

That particular public sector client has also invited Ultra-Protect to join them on its stand at an important trade show – a fantastic opportunity for industry discussions and new business prospecting as a result of improved network resilience.
