Success Story

Global sports timing enhanced by connectivity

Race Result provides timing systems for over 12,000 sporting events globally each year, with Wireless Logic enabling seamless global connectivity through the Conexa virtual mobile network.

About Race Result

Race Result develops technologically leading solutions for timekeeping at international sports competitions. Active and passive timing systems can be used to support a wide range of sports from running competitions to triathlons and motorsport.

Company founder Sönke Petersen had the idea for Race Result back in 1999 when he was just 16 years old and developed the first version of the leading software solution named ‘Laufverwaltung’ for the German-speaking world.

It wasn’t until 2009, when Petersen founded Race Result together with Nikias Klohr and Thorsten Vogel. Today, Race Result employs 60 people at its headquarters in Pfinztal. Race Result is represented by seven distributors on three continents. The company has always been profitable, increasing its customer base and turnover tenfold in the last four years and generating an annual turnover of over 14 million euros in 2022.

Challenge

Timing system-connectivity

Race Result offers active and passive timekeeping solutions and supports 12,000 sporting events per year. The flagship of the product range is ‘UBIDIUM‘ for active timekeeping, particularly for sports such as motorsport, cycling, triathlon or winter sports with recordable top speeds of up to 150 km/h.

For cycling races such as the Tour Down Under in Australia, ActivePro V3 transponders are attached to the bicycle forks. A wire loop is glued to the road and connected to the Ubidium timing system. As soon as a racer crosses the loop, the transponder is activated and sends its time to the system via 2.4 GHz. UBIDIUM forwards all data in real time via mobile radio, WLAN, USB or LAN to the RACE RESULT 12 timing software for evaluation.

Solution

Wireless Logic provides the virtual mobile network Conexa for networking the time measurement system. Conexa connects Ubidium to the leading local mobile network operators worldwide. As the data connection is set up ‘over the air’ there is no need to swap the SIM card for a local one.

Connectivity via Conexa is built directly into the solution, making it an ideal all-in-one package. The customer can order Ubidium complete with the appropriate connectivity from Race Result and does not have to worry about finding suitable SIM cards.

The Future

Race Result chose Wireless Logic due to their need for reliable, international coverage across multiple countries. More importantly, the tailored service offered by Wireless Logic stood out. Rather than providing a generic solution, they customised their approach to meet Race Result’s specific needs, ensuring seamless integration and operation. With the high demands placed on their SIM cards during frequent travel and major events, Race Result relies on Wireless Logic’s robust network support to ensure consistent, strong connectivity—positioning them well for future growth and expanding global operations.

We opted for Wireless Logic because we operate internationally and need coverage across several countries. However, the decisive point was the service. Wireless Logic actively endeavoured to understand our application and take a solution-oriented approach. We travel a lot and attend major events, so we are always dependent on the strongest network. Support requests from our customers have dropped massively since we started working with Wireless Logic
