Kemeltron Automation: IoT solution for Legionella control

Wireless Logic helps Kemeltron Automation ensure robust coverage to prevent Legionella bacteria — the cause of Legionnaires’ disease — in public and private buildings.

About Kemeltron

With over 20 years of experience, Kemeltron Automation is a Basque technology company that brings together expertise in chemistry and electronics through its two founding partners. As a result of this combination, they have specialised in the manufacture and development of solutions for the chemical analysis of substances in water, the monitoring of air quality and the control of biocides; more recently they have focused on the detection of legionella.

They also have a proprietary platform for storing, processing and visualising data in the cloud, thus providing their customers with up-to-date visibility on the chemical parameters of their facilities. Kemeltron designs and manufactures its own devices, and its structure allows them great flexibility in identifying market opportunities and creating specific solutions with great agility and efficiency.

How to control legionella in public buildings

Challenge

Control of legionellosis by IoT

The regulations for legionella control in public facilities, updated in July 2024 by Royal Decree 614/2024, require water sampling to be carried out at terminal points (taps or showers). This nationwide regulation applies to all public administration buildings, including hospitals, care homes, schools, fire stations, and police stations.

Before the regulatory change, sampling was limited to the cooling tower, using specialized equipment to analyse water parameters such as chlorine, pH, temperature, and turbidity. These devices operate by circulating water under specific conditions. Activating equipment at the tap level presents different challenges, both in terms of design and manufacture and sampling: for the daily analysis of substances, it is necessary for the water to circulate, and it is possible that there are days when no one opens a certain tap manually.

Solution

To meet the requirements of the new regulations for Legionella control, Kemeltron has designed a specific solution that combines, in a single device, the measurement of temperature, chlorine and pH. This system has a programmable solenoid valve to perform automatic sampling, daily and remotely. Each device uses only the equivalent of one glass of water per day to perform the measurements.

Naturally, the device requires a reliable and redundant connectivity solution to ensure data is transmitted to its cloud platform as often as needed. Given the geographic diversity of deployments and the varied access conditions, a multi-operator solution is essential to guarantee maximum communications availability.

Kemeltron turned to Wireless Logic for a multi-operator solution tailored to its real communication needs. Since data consumption is low, they required a tariff aligned with usage to keep the total cost of ownership at sustainable levels

With Conexa, our global multi-operator network built for IoT, we provided Kemeltron a tailor-made solution that enables them to deliver public administrations a comprehensive, easy-to-install, and competitively priced service.

Result

After successful connectivity tests, Kemeltron began to deploy its solution on a national scale. Thanks to their agility in the design and manufacture of their new product, and the flexibility of Wireless Logic in the connectivity layer, they become the first player in the market able to offer a comprehensive plug & play solution that complies with the new regulation for Legionella control.

With the SIMPro platform, they have full traceability of their SIM fleet deployed with Wireless Logic, gaining visibility and daily control over consumption, remote on-demand SIM activation, and configurable alerts to prevent overbilling.

Wireless Logic connects chemical and electrical equipment

"Wireless Logic offers us a multi-operator solution adjusted to our needs, and the SIMPro platform offers us the possibility to perform a proactive and remote check of the communications of all our equipment, through a very convenient and intuitive interface."
