Qu'est-ce que le SD-WAN ?

Le SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) désigne une méthode de mise en réseau étendue (WAN) qui crée une superposition de réseau virtualisé reliant plusieurs sites à un réseau central. Comparé aux architectures de réseau traditionnelles, le SD-WAN facilite la gestion de tous les appareils connectés depuis un seul emplacement. Il peut simplifier la gestion du trafic dans le cadre de grands projets IoT, réduire les pannes et renforcer la sécurité du réseau.

Qu'est-ce que le SD-WAN ?

Le SD-WAN est un ensemble de réseaux locaux (LAN) qui communiquent entre eux sur une vaste zone géographique (allant de quelques kilomètres à des milliers de kilomètres) ou sur plusieurs sites.

Un SD-WAN est défini par logiciel, ce qui signifie qu'il est configuré de manière programmatique pour suivre des règles opérationnelles définies par l'entreprise propriétaire du WAN.

Prise en charge de multiples connexions

Sélection dynamique des chemins

Le SD-WAN peut automatiquement acheminer le trafic de données vers le lien WAN le plus approprié, en fonction des caractéristiques du trafic et des conditions du réseau. Ainsi, si un lien risque d'être surchargé, le trafic peut être redirigé vers un autre chemin afin de maintenir des niveaux de performance optimaux.

MPLS vs SD-WAN

Historiquement, le Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) a été la méthode la plus populaire pour les réseaux étendus (WAN). L'MPLS est essentiellement une connexion privée reliant des bureaux distants à un hub central. Il est considéré comme une méthode fiable et sécurisée de gestion de réseau.

Bien que ce système soit souvent une bonne option pour relier des bureaux distants au siège d’une entreprise, il n’a pas été conçu pour gérer le volume et la nature dynamique du trafic de données pouvant résulter d’un grand nombre d’appareils IoT ou de la mobilité des utilisateurs informatiques. Cela peut entraîner une pression ou une variabilité sur la bande passante des données, ce qui provoque une baisse de la qualité des performances et une mauvaise expérience utilisateur. De plus, il peut être coûteux de mettre à niveau une solution MPLS existante pour répondre à de nouvelles initiatives IoT.

En revanche, le SD-WAN offre un moyen plus simple de gérer un grand volume d’appareils et plusieurs types de connexions, tout en acheminant automatiquement le trafic vers le chemin le plus approprié. Pour les entreprises souhaitant intensifier leurs stratégies IoT, le SD-WAN est souvent une option plus flexible et rentable.

SDN vs SD-WAN

Les réseaux traditionnels s'appuient sur des dispositifs matériels dédiés (comme les routeurs et les commutateurs) pour contrôler le trafic réseau.

En revanche, le Software-Defined Networking (SDN) utilise des contrôleurs basés sur des logiciels pour communiquer avec le matériel réseau et diriger le trafic réseau. Ainsi, au lieu de devoir programmer de nombreux dispositifs matériels séparés, les administrateurs peuvent contrôler leurs réseaux simplement en utilisant un seul contrôleur basé sur un logiciel.

Le SDN a d'abord été utilisé pour rendre la gestion des réseaux locaux plus efficace. Cependant, le SD-WAN reprend ce principe et l’améliore. Avec une solution SD-WAN, le SDN crée une superposition basée sur un logiciel sur l'ensemble du réseau étendu, permettant de gérer ce réseau de manière beaucoup plus efficace.

Une solution SD-WAN comporte généralement un hub de contrôle unique. Cela facilite grandement le déploiement de politiques de gestion du réseau alignées sur les priorités de l’entreprise. Par exemple, vous pouvez établir une règle stipulant que le trafic de données provenant de certaines catégories d’utilisateurs est acheminé uniquement via des connexions sécurisées. Chaque fois que vous mettez à jour votre politique, celle-ci est immédiatement téléchargée sur tous les appareils concernés.

Avec le SD-WAN, le trafic peut être acheminé automatiquement par le chemin le plus approprié, ce qui vous aide à minimiser les points de défaillance uniques et à maintenir les niveaux de performance.
