ARECO transforms its global operations through IoT-driven maintenance

Background

ARECO is a global specialist in fresh produce preservation and in-store nebulisation (misting) technology. Their misting systems are designed to maintain optimal humidity levels (around 90% RH), ensuring the freshness, taste, and organoleptic quality of fruits and vegetables throughout the day.

By combining innovation and sustainability, ARECO’s solutions not only enhance the visual appeal of fresh produce departments but also significantly reduce food waste. Thanks to a stable and controlled hygrometry, products retain their quality for longer, helping retailers reduce spoilage and optimise resource use across their supply chain.

Operating such complex equipment involves significant challenges: 

  • High availability requirements: machines must operate without failure to guarantee product quality.
  • Technical complexity: precision nozzles and multiple components increase the risk of breakdowns or clogging.
  • High maintenance costs: technician travel and part replacements are expensive, especially with a global customer base. 
  • Reactive-only maintenance: interventions were traditionally triggered after breakdowns, generating additional costs and service delays. 

Solution

To address these issues, ARECO partnered with Wireless Logic Group to digitise its operations through the Kheiron IoT Suite

  • Deployment of a gateway connected via Ethernet to the machines, with data transmitted over 4G to the Kheiron platform. 
  • Creation of a digital twin for each machine, enabling real-time data collection, remote monitoring, and control. 
  • Transition from reactive to preventive maintenance, with R&D underway on predictive AI-based features. 
  • Integration of APIs to connect with the Australian supermarket database, automatically generating maintenance schedules and sending notifications. 
  • Launch of a new advanced digital maintenance service, transforming ARECO's service model and unlocking new business opportunities.

The results were immediate and measurable: 

  • The central management solution was launched in Australia across 600 supermakets. 
  • Major savings on maintenance operations, reducing interventions from 3.2 to 2.5 per site per year, cutting costs and lowering carbon footprint. 
  • Remote configuration enabled large-scale changes (e.g. adjusting fogging schedules when store opening hours changed) at the click of a button, avoiding costly manual interventions. 

  • The Kheiron connectivity option, initially included in maintenance contracts, became a standalone revenue stream for ARECO.
