Success Story

Reducing fleet fuel costs with IoT connectivity

Driver behaviour technology optimises fleet performance

About Lightfoot

Lightfoot driver behaviour technology is helping drivers to use less fuel, reduce harmful emissions and their carbon footprint as well as stay safe on the road. And as a reward, Lightfoot offers drivers with additional goodies like discounts, prizes and the driver’s lottery as incentives to always drive with efficiency.

Challenge

Lightfoot were originally a small start-up but niche in driver behaviour technology. Although nimble, they needed help and support to scale up. With plans to grow the company  outside of the UK market, they needed to find a connectivity solutions that was not limited to one network. Giving their customers choice, roaming ability as well as competitively priced plans generating long term revenue opportunities for them.

They chose to work with  IoT connectivity platform provider Wireless Logic, to unify a range of services under one roof.

Solution

The technical brief from Lightfoot to Wireless Logic was straightforward from a solutions perspective. They wanted a solution that would provide relatively low data usage, two-way communication via SMS and a broad-reaching network with no downtime. They wanted to ensure the system used could be adjusted and have management of multiple services including a data analysis and reporting platform, as well as mapping and tracking capabilities. This would enable them to be able to reach drivers out on the road and monitor real-time driver performance.

The Lightfoot device itself connects to the vehicle’s internal computer, by plugging into the OBDII port, and sits on the dashboard. Lights and optional audio provide the person behind the wheel with real time information on how efficiently they are driving. As the Lightfoot device is connected directly to the vehicle’s computer, it will adjust the feedback according to live engine data, and provide bespoke guidance for the vehicle, driving style and roads being driven on. This therefore encourages drivers to be more mindful and travel to destinations in a more fuel-efficient way.

An eSIM within the Lightfoot module sends data to a central server from which fleet management can advise, encourage and incentivise individual drivers too.

Lightfoot also provide an app where individual scores are recorded. This is provided after every journey taken and league tables can be set up to compete for the ‘Elite Driver’ award, incentives and prizes.

By having behaviour technology installed within fleets, having a highly effective yet simple telematics solutions, focussing on the driver, means companies are able to reduce transport costs whilst capitalising on the immediacy of live data analysis, all enabled with IoT connectivity.

Outcome

Drivers can see their own driving behaviour in the cabin of their allocated vehicle and driving styles are able to change immediately, without having to wait on a report. By having a real-time monitoring system, those out on the road are able to reduce their engine, brake and clutch wear, have increased MPG by +20%, reduced CO2 levels by 20%, and accidents and vehicle insurance claim frequency has also decreased by 40%, resulting in a positive effect on insurance premiums with reduced vehicle and driver downtime.

Lightfoot is growing rapidly we have 28,000 Lightfoot units across the UK and we are expanding into Europe.SIMPro is critical to our business and real time monitoring provides our drivers and fleet managers complete control, to make decisions and actions which ultimately improves fuel savings, reduce carbon, improves driver behaviour and saves lives.
