Blackfrog Technologies manufactures Emvólio, a portable temperature-regulated carrier for the last-mile transport of biologics including vaccines, blood, serums and medications.

In hard-to-reach rural areas of India and Africa, Emvólio ensures its lifesaving contents arrive at their destinations within the precise temperature range they need to be viable. If they fall out of range, as can happen when vaccines and specimens are carried in ice boxes which does not have a temperature monitoring system, the contents can be rendered unusable.

Each Emvólio IoT carrier contains an M2M SIM for two-way data exchange. Cellular connectivity is the natural choice for these portable devices. The data transfer it enables provides Blackfrog and its customers with detailed insights into health campaigns, such as vaccination programmes.

The Emvólio solves a significant healthcare challenge to reach isolated communities with vaccines and other biologics. However, Blackfrog had experienced some connectivity issues and data dropouts.

“We need real-time data,” says Priyanka Jain, Senior Program Manager at Blackfrog Technologies. “Reliable connectivity is crucial to ensure that no data packets are lost when devices transmit information to the dashboard, especially alerts related to temperature excursions or low battery levels. With access to timely data, it becomes much easier to trace devices and take necessary actions.”

A significant percentage of vaccines are wasted globally, often due to accidental freezing or thawing. Priyanka explains that the data from Emvólio carriers serves two key purposes: real-time monitoring and detailed reporting. Blackfrog’s customers rely on this data to assess the performance and impact of the temperature-regulated carriers, ensuring better control and accountability in vaccine delivery.

Blackfrog approached Wireless Logic on the recommendation of another healthcare technology company. Wireless Logic analysed the product and Blackfrog’s geographic requirements and recommended Conexa with SIMPro.
