Electric vehicles, the IoT and the smart grid

Justin Godfrey-Cass, Head of Transport Solutions, Wireless Logic explains why cellular connectivity helps Charge Point Operators monitor and maintain charge points and understand the load EV charge points place on the network.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging forms part of a transformed energy infrastructure that is more efficient, sustainable and resilient. The energy infrastructure that powers the EV charge point rollout needs to be smart, managing inputs and outputs to optimise capacity and distribution.

The IoT provides connectivity for monitoring and management, contributing to an understanding of network load and supporting the maintenance of EV infrastructure.

AI Journal recently published insights into what electric vehicles and the IoT contribute to the smart grid. The article explores:

  • What is the smart grid? – more intelligent than the traditional grid, the smart grid can be more dynamically managed to meet power demand
  • What do electric vehicles contribute? – by monitoring charge points, operators can understand the load they place on the network. EV charging infrastructure can even feed energy back into the grid
  • What infrastructure is needed to support electric vehicles? – the UK is expected to have 300,000 charge points by 2030. These charge points must be available, operational and secure
  • How does the IoT connect EV charge points? – connectivity enables performance monitoring, hardware maintenance and usage management. Cellular connectivity meets the need for scalable EV charge point deployment without the disruption of cabling.
