Why we need to stop talking about SGP.32

While smartphones and automotive embrace eSIM, IoT remains stuck on SGP.32 - it’s time to focus on real-world solutions. Iain Davidson, Senior Product Marketing Manager, explains.

In the tech and telecom landscape, consumer demand and automotive innovation set the pace. From the rise of 5G to the dominance of smartphones, mainstream adoption happens when technology aligns with real-world convenience. eSIM is no exception.

At MWC 2025, the message was clear: eSIM is moving from an optional feature to a default expectation in smartphones and automotive. But in the IoT space, most vendors are still stuck in the starting blocks, tangled in technical discussions rather than delivering solutions at scale.

Meanwhile, Wireless Logic is already shipping eSIM in volume - leading in remote SIM provisioning (RSP) and delivering seamless global connectivity through advanced OTA automation for multi-IMSI, eSIM, and iSIM.

Digital-enablement or augmentation of the workforce is one of the drivers along with dashcam, bodycam, healthcare and retail applications.

Smartphones & Automotive: The eSIM-First Era is Here

GSMA Intelligence shared fresh insights that highlight the accelerating shift toward eSIM-first:

  • 76% of smartphones will support eSIM by 2030
  • 50% of consumers are now aware of eSIM, but adoption is lagging
  • Of those aware, only 19% have used it—mostly for international travel (51%)

While education gaps remain, the smartphone industry is already pivoting towards eSIM-first devices. Apple’s move to remove the physical SIM tray in the U.S. was just the start. As more manufacturers follow suit, eSIM will no longer be a niche option but the standard.

In automotive, eSIM is already embedded in connected vehicles, enabling seamless connectivity for navigation, diagnostics, and over-the-air updates. The industry has moved past the technical debates and focused on delivering a connected driving experience. The question is: why hasn’t IoT done the same?

IoT & eSIM: We are changing the conversation

Many vendors at MWC remained fixated on the technical complexities of eSIM for IoT – SGP.32, permanent roaming, and remote SIM provisioning. While these are critical enablers, the focus needs to shift. Businesses don’t buy technology; they buy solutions to problems.

The Real Business Benefits of eSIM for IoT

Instead of drowning you in acronyms, we will work with you to assess eSIM against your business needs. From experience, these fall into 3 main areas.

  • Cost Savings & Logistics Efficiency : eSIM eliminates SIM swaps and truck rolls, reduces go-to-market costs with a single SKU, and simplifies supply chain management by allowing devices to be provisioned remotely.
  • Global Flexibility & Scalability : IoT devices can connect to the best available network in any region without physical SIM changes, ensuring seamless operations across borders.
  • Security & Reliability : eSIMs reduce the risk of SIM fraud, tampering, and unauthorized access, making them ideal for industrial and mission-critical applications.

Wireless Logic: Leading the IoT eSIM Revolution

Unlike many IoT vendors still navigating the early stages of eSIM adoption, Wireless Logic is already delivering eSIM at scale. Our approach converges consumer, M2M, and new IoT standards into a unified, future-proof connectivity solution.

We don’t just talk about eSIM – we lead in remote SIM provisioning (RSP) and focus on customer outcomes through advanced OTA automation for:

  • Multi-IMSI solutions for seamless global connectivity
  • eSIM and iSIM deployments optimised for IoT at scale
  • Full compliance with SGP.32, SGP.22, and SGP.02

For the techies, those specs do matter. But we won’t let them get in the way of what truly matters – solving your business challenges.
